Tazza (one of a pair)

c. 1844
Made by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg (1744–present)
Originally part of a large dinner service, this tazza, one of a pair, bears the crest of the Hessen-Kassel family. Czar Nicholas I of Russia probably gave the service to Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel and his wife as a gift to mark the engagement or wedding of their children. The czar's daughter, Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna, and the Hessen-Kassel's son, Friedrich Wilhelm, were married in Saint Petersburg on January 28, 1844.
