Kim Hyung Joo is a papermaker and artist who reinterprets Korean tradition in contemporary modes. The primary focus of her art is women's clothing and language.
Using the traditional short-waisted chogori jacket worn by women, Kim addresses aspects of culture as is evident in Key to the Inner World. This piece in the shape of a jacket literally enfolds a traditional Korean metal key of the type used for blanket chests. Kim Hyung Joo has used a key that belonged to her grandmother to form the heart and ancestral focus of this very effective piece.
