Most of Atget's prints are albumen silver prints. This example is somewhat faded, as seen in comparison with its negative: the negative contains more detail in the tablecloth and the objects on the mantel, for instance, than has survived in the print. Albumen prints were nearly obsolete when Atget began making photographs, but he evidently valued them for their clarity and delicate tonal range. He also worked with other papers and processes, usually matte albumen silver prints or gelatin silver chloride prints.
