Salomon Gessner (Swiss, 1730–1788)

Gessner was a pastoral poet and artist whose idyllic verses enjoyed as much vogue as his paintings and etchings. His Idyllen of 1756 was so well received that it was translated into twenty languages and remained popular well into the nineteenth century.
