The Brothers Eberhard

1822
Johann Anton Ramboux (German, 1790–1866) In reverse after a painting of 1822 by Johann Anton Ramboux (German, 1790–1866) Printed by Joseph Anton Selb (German, 1784–1832)
Ramboux’s masterful lithograph of the sculptors Konrad (1767–1836) and Franz (1768–1859) Eberhard is a striking example of a “friendship portrait,” a new type of intimate portraiture favored by German Romantic artists. Ramboux’s use of soft lithographic crayon printed in grayish-black ink over a background printed in warm brown is ideally suited to convey both the craggy features of the Eberhard brothers and the tender affection that the printmaker and his sitters felt for one another.
