Attributed to H. Clasen (German, active c. 1800)

The ivory, shell, and cobalt glass ornament on the back of this miniature forms an elegant testament to friendship. A woman in classical dress holds a garland of flowers to be placed on a monument that bears the inscription GAGE D'AMITIE or "pledge of friendship."
