Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887–1972)

Jamini Roy looked at the many folk painting traditions of the Bengal region to construct a vocabulary of simplified forms done in bold, flat colors. Roy established an extensive workshop in which he and his assistants reproduced his painted models, often with only slight variation. Most of his production was in opaque watercolor on paper, with multiple versions of each model. This work, of which one other version is known, is not only larger than his norm, but is also painted on cotton rather than paper.
