Anthony Rasch (American (born Bavaria), c. 1778–1859)

The design of this silver water pitcher, with its smooth and bulbous sides, is modeled on ceramic water pitchers that were popular in the early nineteenth century. Silversmith Anthony Rasch was a master of classical ornament, and the wonderfully sculpted mask on the spout is characteristic of this talent. In 1804 Rasch emigrated from Bavaria to Philadelphia, where he worked in the shop of Simon Chaudron before opening his own establishment in 1813. Like many craftsmen, Rasch saw promise in the burgeoning New Orleans market and moved there in 1820.
