Devotional Fryer (Friar)

1838 (April)
Charles West Cope (British, 1811–1890) Published by Etching Club, London Portrait of Thomas Fearnley (Norwegian, 1802–1842)
Cope, a painter of contemporary genre scenes, pokes fun at fellow Etching Club member Thomas Fearnley, a Norwegian landscape painter of English descent who played an active role in the club during its first two years and who was known for his boyish antics. Cope presents a comic scene of Fearnley, dressed as a monk, involved in one of his favorite pastimes.
