In the mid- 1520s Hans Maler painted several portraits of the immensely wealthy merchant and banker Anton Fugger (1493-1560) of Augsburg, Germany. Anton's patronage of the artist coincided with the Fugger family's establishment of a business branch in the flourishing silver mining town of Schwaz in Tyrol, Austria, where Maler worked.
