The Schreierstoren, Amsterdam

1882
Jacob Hendricus Maris (Dutch (active The Hague and London), 1837–1899)
This painting depicts the northern section of Amsterdam near the harbor, with the steepled building known as the Schreierstoren on the left and the dome of a Lutheran church in the distance. Both buildings survive today. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Maris was considered the leading Dutch artist of his age.
