The Death of Silvia's Stag
Peter Paul RubensFlemish (active Italy, Antwerp, and England), 1577 - 1640
The theme of this sketch (taken from Virgil's Aeneid) and its technique are related to a group of sketches Rubens executed toward the end of his life for paintings intended for the Royal Palace in Madrid. Rubens turned the sketches for this set over to his assistants to complete on a large scale. A painting of this subject now in Gerona, Spain, may be the final picture.
