Christ before Pilate, with Christ Led to Annas, the Mocking of Christ, the Denial by Peter, and Christ before Caiaphas

Master of the Beighem Altarpiece

Netherlandish (active Brussels), active 1520 - 1540

The coat of arms in the upper part of this panel has been identified as that of Guillaume de Croy (1458–1521), an advisor to Emperor Charles V who ruled Spain and the Netherlands. The artist worked in and around Brussels, which was the administrative center of Charles V's empire in the Netherlands. The golden chain surrounding the coat of arms shows that de Croy was a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an imperial order.
