Saint Bernardino of Siena

c. 1465-1470
Antonio Vivarini (Italian (active Venice), born by 1441, died 1476/84)
Soon after Bernardino's canonization in 1450, portraits of him began to appear in Italian altarpieces. Here, the saint is depicted holding a tablet inscribed with the name of Jesus in Greek. Due to Bernardino's influence, this emblem became a popular decoration for Italian churches, public buildings, and houses.
