Time-Based Media

The term “time-based media'' describes an artwork that is durational in nature. This can include film, video, sound, performance, and computer or web-based works. Since the museum began actively collecting film and video in 2005, the Contemporary Art department has acquired more than 100 works in these media, including a prominent selection of historical films from Electronic Arts Intermix, a strong group of media-based work promised from the collection of Keith L. and Katherine Sachs, and a recent gift of film and video works from the collection of Peter and Mari Shaw. Through the Future Fields Commission in Time-Based Media series, the museum is continuing to support and acquire ambitious works by a new generation of artists whose practices are pushing into new territory within time-based media as we know it.
