Chinese Buddhist Art

Set of Ten Volumes of the Sutra “The Great Perfection of Reason”, 1440, Chinese

Buddhist sculptures and other forms of imagery were created as an act of religious devotion and helped spread the faith. Many of the collection’s important Chinese Buddhist wood and stone sculptures were acquired in the 1920s under the museum’s first director, Langdon Warner. A highlight of the collection is the magnificent 600-year-old lacquered wood ceiling from the Zhihua Temple in Beijing.
