The Image of the City at the Time of Pissarro

March 7–June 13, 1993

In conjunction with Pissarro's Series, the Museum is mounting a focus exhibition on the theme of the city in late 19th and early 20th century French art. Pissaro was not alone at that time in depicting the modern city, particularly Paris. This exhibition will present approximately 16 works in various media by Pissarro and his contemporaries including Renoir, Manet, Bastien-Lepage, Cézanne and Signac. It will demonstrate the central role of city imagery in the art of the day and place Pissarro's extraordinary achievement as a painter of cities into a fuller artistic and social context.
