Sidney Goodman

Sidney Goodman is a major exhibition presenting over 50 paintings and drawings from public and private collections throughout the country. This is the first retrospective of the nationally renowned Philadelphia artist to be shown in his hometown. Goodman emerged in the early 1960's as one of the leading American artists in the return to the human figure as a primary subject, and has remained an influential force in contemporary art for some 30 years. A local artist, Goodman was born and raised here, attended the Philadelphia College of Art, teaches at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and now lives in Center City Philadelphia. Since his first showing in 1961, Goodman has earned a national reputation. His work continues to explore the human condition, particularly issues of mortality, desire, and aspiration, but now on a monumental scale appropriate to such age-old, universal themes. This exhibition will aim to provide both a contribution to the contemporary art scene and a celebration appropriate to a major Philadelphia talent.
