Recent Acquisitions: Prints and Drawings from the 1960s to the Present

November 26, 1999–April 2, 2000

Each year the museum’s Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs acquires an average of 250 works of art by gift or purchase. Recent Acquisitions: Prints and Drawings from the 1960s to the Present features a selection of some fifty prints and drawings dating from the 1960s to the present that were acquired during the last five years. A generous grant from the Hunt Corporation, which encourages the acquisition of “adventurous and risk-taking“ works of art on paper, made possible the purchase of works by Philip Taaffe, Mary Judge, and the young Chinese artist, Hong Hao. The Friends of the Philadelphia Museum of Art provided funds for a suite of woodcuts by Donald Judd and a magnificent recent color intaglio print by Jasper Johns, Untitled, 1998. Recent work by a number of Philadelphia artists, such as Virgil Marti, Yané Calovski, John Dowell, Edna Andrade, Bill Walton, and Susan Crowder, is also represented. An effort to acquire important prints and drawings dating from the 1960s to the early 1970s, which is an area under-represented in the collection, may be seen in an early multiple by Joseph Beuys, Two Fräuleins with Shining Bread, 1966 and a gunpowder drawing by Ed Ruscha, Pool, 1968.
