Philadelphia Modernism: Arthur B. Carles and His Circle

May 10–August 12, 2001

This installation celebrates the adventurous paintings of Philadelphia artist Arthur B. Carles (1882–1952) and his circle of friends, students, and colleagues. Best known for his daring use of color and abstraction, Carles was a dynamic teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he introduced his students to the art and ideas of Matisse, Picasso, and other modern painters from Europe. On view are approximately thirty paintings drawn from the museum’s permanent collection.
