Perfect Little Ladies: Fashion Dolls and the Art of Dress in the 1870s

August 24, 1991–January 26, 1992

This exhibition will display three fashion dolls from the Museum's permanent collection, along with a dozen of their elaborate outfits which will include hats, gloves, shoes, jewelry, parasols, and other accoutrements. The dolls will be organized to depict the various activities and concerns perceived at the time as proper for women, as well as the emphasis which was placed on the "feminine" arts of dress and etiquette. The Costume case in the American wing will be changed to show full-sized fashions from the same period.
