Master Drawings from Leipzig

April 20–June 23, 1991

One of the great European collections of prints and drawings, the Graphic Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig is justifiably famous among scholars and connoisseurs but not well known to the public at large, which is more familiar with the collection in Vienna, Paris, London, Berlin, and Dresden. This exhibition will introduce American audiences to 125 of the finest drawings from the Leipzig Museum. The selection, which spans five centuries from 1480 to 1984 was based on the choice of 150 of Leipzig's finest drawings for the catalogue The World of Drawing: Master Drawings. Museum der bildenden Kunste Leipzig. The exhibition includes masterpieces of early German art such as the Master of the House Book's delicate silverpoint drawing Pair of Lovers with a Falcon and Hans Holbein the Younger's finished presentation drawing on gray prepared paper Madonna and Child. The exhibition allows an overview of not only the collection of the Leipzig Museum but also the role of drawing in the history of art and insight into the enthusiastic collecting of the citizens of Leipzig.
