Main Building
This exhibition represents a major mid-career retrospective of the American sculptor Martin Puryear. It surveys his work up to the present, focusing on forty of his relief and three-dimensional indoor pieces. Puryear's unique contribution to contemporary sculpture exists in his synthesis of the modern tradition with love and knowledge of non-Western architecture, sculpture and craft. Informed equally by tribal art forms, Japanese aesthetics, Scandinavian design and the work of Brancusi and Arp, Puryear's art is one of profound, organic simplicity. This exhibition was organized by The Art Institute of Chicago in collaboration with the artist; The Philadelphia Museum of Art is the final stop on its national tour. A 160-page fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
