Fun & Games in Japanese Art

August 14, 1999–June 18, 2000

The subjects of this installation are the games, festivals, theater and amusements of children and adults in traditional Japan. A spectacular pair of screens of Japanese trading ships features dance, music, and games shared by the Japanese and Portuguese passengers alike. Several paintings focus on activities and games for children, such as kites and puppeteers. Theater provided entertainment for the aristocrat and the commoner in the form of festival performances, and on the kabuki and Noh stages. Theatrical masks, representing characters such as a white fox, and a beautiful woman, are among the memorable objects featured in this installation.
