From Sacred Groves to Country Roads: Pastoral Themes in European and American Drawings, 1730–1980

September 15, 2001–January 20, 2002

Throughout the ages, artists have imbued in scenes of rural life a sense of innocence, rustic charm, and simplicity.

The installation of some thirty drawings, watercolors, gouaches, and pastels reflects a variety of rustic themes: sacred groves; herdsmen and their animals; idyllic landscapes with classical allusions; and the earthy produce of field and farm so often invoked to celebrate autumn.

Included are works by European and American artists, among them Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Samuel Palmer, Maxfield Parrish, Edward Hopper, and Eddie Arning.
