The Ramayana is an ancient epic that is recounted, visualized, and performed throughout South Asia. Explore diverse interpretations of this story from the 1200s to 2005 spanning different mediums including paper, stone, and fabric.
The hero Rama is viewed as an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, born to restore cosmic balance between good and evil. When Rama is banished from his kingdom for fourteen years, his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana accompany him in exile. Along their journey, they encounter many friends and frightening foes, like the ten-headed demon Ravana who kidnaps Sita. With the help of the monkeys he has befriended, Rama must overcome mighty forces in a terrible battle to defeat Ravana and reunite with his wife.
