Diane Arbus: Magazine Work 1960-1971, an exhibition of over 60 photographs originally published in Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, London Sunday Times Magazine, Saturday Evening Post and other mass circulation periodicals will be on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from December 6, 1986 to January 18, 1987. Arbus's reputation as one of the most important and original photographers of recent decades has been based primarily on her private work and powerful images of freaks and outcasts. Yet like most photographers of her time, she looked to magazine work as a means of earning a living and of gaining access to people and events otherwise hard to reach. Her superb portraits and photographic essays commissioned between 1960 and her death in 1971, originally seen by a huge audience, have never before been presented as a unified whole. This exhibition consists of vintage prints, modern prints from original negatives borrowed from the Estate of Diane Arbus, and examples of the original magazine layouts and presentation of these photographs.
