Organized in conjunction with Beauford Delaney: From New York to Paris (November 13, 2005–January 29, 2006), Beauford Delaney in Context situates Delaney's creative output within a broader framework by presenting paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and furniture from the Museum's collection that relate to various aspects of the artist's extraordinary career. Included are figurative scenes of urban life by artists such as John Sloan and Claude Clark, abstract paintings by Sam Francis and Alma Thomas, and works by self-taught African American artists Horace Pippin, Thornton Dial, and William Edmondson. Beauford Delaney in Context also features works by living artists such as Glenn Ligon and John Dowell.
