Artists and Artisans of African Descent

December 8, 2018–February 24, 2019

Discover the literal and symbolic marks left on early American art by makers of African descent. Both enslaved and free, these often-uncredited artists and artisans played a fundamental part in the American story while finding ways to protect themselves against racist views. Their surviving works present undeniable evidence of their expertise.
