The Irma and Herbert Barness Endowed Lecture
A panel of scholars and curators, including Claudine Grammont and Ellen McBreen, discuss the life and work of Lydia Delectorskaya, Matisse’s studio assistant, manager, and model. This talk shines light on the importance of this often overlooked figure, providing a deeper understanding of her role in Matisse’s studio practice.

About the Speakers
Matthew Affron is the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art.
Claudine Grammont is an independent scholar and curator recently appointed as Director of the Musée Matisse Nice. After earning her doctorate degree with a dissertation on the genesis of Fauvism (Paris-Sorbonne 2000), she pursued her research on this movement. Recently, the greater part of her work has been devoted to Matisse. She was a consultant for the exhibition Matisse: Radical Invention 1911-1917 and contributed essays to several exhibition catalogs, including The Steins Collect and Matisse in Search of True Painting. In 2016, she co-authored Matisse in the Barnes Foundation with Yve-Alain Bois and Kate Butler.
Ellen McBreen is Professor and Chair of the History of Art at Wheaton College, Massachusetts, where she also directs the Wheaton Institute for the Interdisciplinary Humanities. Her principle publications include Matisse’s Sculpture: The Pinup and The Primitive and Matisse in the Studio, the companion book for the exhibition she co-curated for MFA Boston and London’s Royal Academy. She contributed an essay about Lydia Delectorskaya to the current Matisse in the 1930s exhibition book.
