Film Screening: The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

Saturday, May 6,
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST

Join us for a screening of the 1939 film The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum by Kenji Mizoguchi. This story follows an onnagata—a male actor specializing in playing female roles—struggling for artistic mastery, offering a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of kabuki theater in late nineteenth century Japan.

The screening will be prefaced by remarks from Monique D'Almeida, curator of our exhibition Scandal & Virtue: Staging Kabuki in Osaka Prints, and Rob Buscher, Associate Director of Organizational Culture at the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia.
