This tour covers a diverse sampling of late Medieval and early Renaissance works of art in the Museum’s collections. These painted, modeled, and sculpted works show insight into how life changed in Italy during the 13th to 16th centuries. They also reflect on some of the major changes in techniques used by artists and their subjects, as they visually document the rapidly occurring advances in literacy and the sciences. The tour concludes with an intriguing painting that depicts a wealthy Renaissance gentleman witnessing an extraordinary and mystical event of nature.

“That’s not art!” roared Theodore Roosevelt. Insanity, cried the critics.” Why do we celebrate an art exhibit, held for just one wintry month in 1913, at New York City’s 69th Street Armory? We celebrate the 1913 Armory Show, because it changed forever the face of America’s traditional realistic art form by introducing us to Europe’s new art forms, such as: Cubism, Futurism, German Expressionism, and Impressionism. As a result, NYC soon became the new home for the world’s most creative artists. On this tour, we will meet many of the “Armory’s” imaginative or, if you wish, scandalous artists.

This tour explores the dazzling Chinese porcelain made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), on display in the Palace Reception Hall. It examines the extraordinary technical and artistic achievements in the production of the ceramics as well as the hidden meanings in the decorative motifs. These ceramics were part of an important private collection that was given to the Museum. The installation will close in the not-too-distant future.
