Driving directions to the Fairmount Historic Houses

Mount Pleasant and Cedar Grove are located in East and West Fairmount Park, separated by the Schuylkill River.

 

Mount Pleasant

3800 Mt. Pleasant Drive, Philadelphia 19121

From Southern Locations: South Jersey, Delaware, Baltimore, Washington, D.C.
Take I-95 North (from southern New Jersey, cross the Delaware River via the Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry, or Delaware Memorial Bridge to reach I-95 North). Exit onto I-676 West. Follow directions from I-676 West (see below).

From Northern Locations
Take the New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 4 (Route 73). Go 1 mile on Route 73 North and take the exit for Route 38 West. Take Route 38 West to Route 30 West and follow signs for the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. After crossing the bridge, follow the signs for I-676 West. Follow directions from I-676 West (see below).

From I-676 West (Vine Street Expressway)
Take I-676 West to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway exit (22nd St., Museum area) on the right side. Get into the left lane of the exit ramp. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto 22nd St. into the lane that is second from the left. The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is a boulevard with two outer lanes and two inner lanes. At the intersection of Benjamin Franklin Parkway and 22nd St., turn left onto the outer lanes of the parkway. Continue straight on the Parkway through the next light when the road turns into Kelly Dr. Continue 1 mile and turn right onto Fountain Green Road. Take the first left onto Mount Pleasant Drive and proceed to Mount Pleasant at the top of the hill.

From Western Locations: Valley Forge, King of Prussia
Take I-76 East to Philadelphia. Take Exit 343 (Spring Garden St.). At the end of the exit ramp, turn left. Continue straight and merge onto Eakins Oval. Stay to the left around Eakins Oval merging into the right lane of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Continue straight on the Parkway through the next light when the road turns into Kelly Dr. Continue 1 mile and turn right onto Fountain Green Road. Take the first left onto Mount Pleasant Drive and proceed to Mount Pleasant at the top of the hill.

 

Cedar Grove

4001 Cedar Grove Drive, Philadelphia 19131

From the Art Museum
  • From the intersection of Anne d'Harnoncourt Drive (Art Museum Drive) and Kelly Drive, turn right and pass in front of the Museum by the Rocky statue.
  • From the middle right lane, get onto Martin Luther King, Jr. (West River) Drive*.
  • After about 1.3 miles, turn left onto Sweet Briar Road at the traffic light, then turn right at the stop sign onto Lansdowne Drive.
  • Make the first right at the top of the hill (before the stop sign) to stay on Lansdowne Drive.
  • Enter the traffic circle, and get off (take a slight right) at the first “exit” to stay on Lansdowne Rd.
  • Make a hard right onto Cedar Grove Drive and an immediate left towards Cedar Grove. Park in the cul-de-sac.

This portion of MLK Drive (West River) is closed for recreational activities until noon on weekends from April through October, and sometimes for the entire afternoon as well for special events. At these times use the Girard Street bridge directions outlined below.

From the Art Museum via Girard Street Bridge (when MLK is closed for recreational activities)
  • From the intersection of Anne d'Harnoncourt Drive (Art Museum Drive) and Kelly Drive, turn left onto Kelly Drive.
  • Make a right at the statue of Abraham Lincoln onto Sedgley Drive. Proceed up the hill, staying to the right as the road turns, to the traffic light (Sedgley Drive turns into Poplar Drive).
  • At the light, make a left onto Girard Avenue and cross the bridge. Get into the right lane.
  • At the traffic light at the end of the bridge, make a right onto Lansdowne Drive. Proceed on Lansdowne down the hill, and drive straight at the stop sign at Sweet Briar Road.
  • Make the first right at the top of the hill (before the stop sign) to stay on Lansdowne Drive
  • Enter the traffic circle, and get off (take a slight right) at the first “exit” to stay on Lansdowne Rd.
  • Make a hard right onto Cedar Grove Drive and an immediate left towards Cedar Grove. Park in the cul-de-sac.

From Center City, New Jersey, and the East
  • Take I – 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) westbound past the Art Museum.
  • Get off at Exit 342/ Girard Avenue/ Phila Zoo.
  • At the end of the ramp make a right onto 34th Street; at the light, stay in the center lane.
  • Go straight through the light at Girard Avenue onto Lansdowne Drive. Proceed on Lansdowne, and drive straight at the stop sign at Sweetbriar Road.
  • Make the first right at the top of the hill (before the stop sign) to stay on Lansdowne Drive.
  • Enter the traffic circle, and get off (take a slight right) at the first “exit” to stay on Lansdowne Rd.
  • Make a hard right onto Cedar Grove Drive and an immediate left towards Cedar Grove. Park in the cul-de-sac.

From the west (Main Line and I-476)
  • Take I – 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) eastbound.
  • Get off at Exit 341/ Montgomery Drive/ West Fairmount Park.
  • At the end of the ramp, make a right onto Montgomery Drive.
  • Proceed for .5 miles to the traffic light and make a left onto Belmont Avenue.
  • Drive .4 miles, and make a left onto Avenue of the Republic (North Concourse Dr).
  • Drive past Please Touch Museum (Memorial Hall) on your left to the traffic circle.
  • Enter the traffic circle, and proceed ¾ of the way around, taking the third “exit” to Lansdowne Drive.
  • Make a hard right onto Cedar Grove Drive and an immediate left towards Cedar Grove and park in the cul-de-sac.

From Please Touch Museum (Memorial Hall) (using Septa bus 38 or the Phlash bus, stop 16)
    From the bus stop, Cedar Grove is a 5-10 minute walk – less than ½ mile - on fairly flat terrain. However, parts of the walk do not have sidewalks, so be very aware of traffic.

  • Facing Please Touch Museum (Memorial Hall), turn to your right, and walk eastward down Avenue of the Republic, towards the tall Civil War Memorial (about ¼ of a mile).
  • At the Civil War Memorial, walk down through the arch and along the sidewalk. Cross Lansdowne Drive at the crosswalk, keeping traffic circle to your right.
  • After crossing, walk through the field to your left (sidewalk continues and bears towards the right) down to the intersection of Cedar Grove Drive and Sweet Briar Lane.
  • At this intersection, there is a break in the post-and-rail fence along the running path. Cross the intersection to the path and head to your left along Cedar Grove Drive. You will shortly see a large stone house surrounded by a white fence. This is Cedar Grove.
