"In arranging my new apartment I see your paintings again with so much pleasure.... There's such a note of truth, of real countryside in each one."
Letter to van Gogh from his brother Theo, Paris, March 16, 1889
"I've looked most attentively at your works since we parted; first at your brother's and then at the Independents exhibition. I offer you my sincere compliments, and for many artists you are the most remarkable in the exhibition. With things from nature you are the only one there who thinks."
Letter to van Gogh from artist Paul Gauguin, Paris, March 20, 1890

Our saga: In 1972 my husband and I brought our six children, ages 7 to 15, to the Van Gogh exhibit, touted at the time as an exhibit absolutely "never to return again." Well, I returned for this one with four of those children and two (of eighteen) grandchildren. Our best remembrance was of one daughter who was enticed by Van Gogh's colors at age nine; her daughter (at eleven) was definitely turned onto art by this exhibit and by the other museum galleries. Thank you for the opportunity you afforded our family and all of Philadelphia.

I hate art museums and pretending to enjoy paintings so I left early, but Van Gogh is a very talented artist. I can search him up on the Internet and see like 20000 paintings though so this was pointless. Great job stealing thousands of dollars.-G

Everything was awesome, cool inspirational and the most beautiful thing. Every color inspired me with the happiness or sadness of it. Van Gogh made lots of paintings of flowers.

I think that the Vincent Van Gogh Up Close was a great experience of art. I think everyone should experience it if they can. The wonderful mixtures that he did with the paint had an amazing touch to the paintings.

Love how the exhibit lifts up Van Gogh's humanity and points out his efforts to be hopeful and find beauty even in difficult times... Thank you for opening this exhibit up -- I only wish more could see it, including those without the resources to pay for such an exhibit...

Van Gogh's sense of color choice was magnificent. It left you feeling relaxed, and at peace. The shine on his brush strokes, the texture, everything was aesthetically pleasing. It intriged me, how much of his life was spent in the Asylum. It is sad yet remarkable. Great exhibit!
