Yvonne Duchamp in Profile

1913
Jacques Villon (Gaston Duchamp) (French, 1875–1963)
This large drypoint of Villon's sister Yvonne is based on an earlier painting. Villon later made two paintings of her in a more abstract style. In this drypoint, Villon shattered the composition into a mass of volumetric planes that give the appearance of building blocks. Using this complex system of geometric planes composed of lines of different directions and spacing, Villon translates color values into a linear language of black and white that lends depth, weight, and atmosphere to the figure and the space she occupies.
