The exaggerated figures on this plate reveal the decline of istoriato - or narrative scene - painting on maiolica at the end of the sixteenth century. Details of the composition reflect an accurate reading of Virgil's Aeneid, perhaps an indication that the artist was given a model to follow. The patron, Cardinal Salviati, was a highly educated cleric from an important Florentine family.
