Prints, Drawings, and Photographs Drawing III 1959 Georgia O'Keeffe, American, 1887 - 1986 Charcoal on off-white laid paper Currently not on view 1997-42-1 |
125th Anniversary Acquisition. Purchased with funds contributed by the Arcadia Foundation, and gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation, 1997LabelWater is dark and solid, and meanders like the branches of a tree trunk in this drawing, which was inspired by a series of tiny charcoal sketches of earth and river shapes that Georgia O'Keeffe observed from the air during a trip around the world in 1959. She wrote: "I was surprised to see how many large spots of desert we went over-with a large river or river bed crossing over the sand. I made many drawings about an inch high-that later, when I was home, I made into larger drawings and after that paintings." |
