Water is dark and solid, and meanders like the branches of a tree trunk in this drawing, which was inspired by a series of tiny charcoal sketches of earth and river shapes that Georgia O'Keeffe observed from the air during a trip around the world in 1959. She wrote: "I was surprised to see how many large spots of desert we went over-with a large river or river bed crossing over the sand. I made many drawings about an inch high-that later, when I was home, I made into larger drawings and after that paintings."
