Grinding (or Grinder)

c. 1940
Dox Thrash (American, 1893–1965)
A preliminary drawing for this print, in which the man honing a sword blade is represented as Uncle Sam with his familiar top hat and beard, has survived. Thrash was one of the first American artists to create patriotic images of this type, which were intended to rally support for the defense industry prior to and during World War II.
