Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli
For summer 1928, Schiaparelli’s knitted one- and two-piece bathing suits in striking color combinations were imported to the United States exclusively by Saks Fifth Avenue. This sleeveless sweater with its fish motif originally formed the top of a two-piece suit that would have included flannel trunks with a snugly fitting knitted band around the hips and buttons up the sides. To complete the ensemble Schiaparelli included matching thick-soled knitted bootees with tops that could be turned down and a knitted helmet to wear over a rubber bathing cap. Dilys E.
