Reclining Hunter

1783-1784
Ralph Earl (American, 1751–1801)
Ralph Earl studied in England for several years during the American Revolution and was one of many American painters of the time who included natural scenes in his compositions. This enigmatic depiction of a reclining hunter suggests the emerging English view of the natural world as a place of repose and contemplation, where the beauties and pleasures of the countryside could be enjoyed.
