Shad Fishermen Hauling the Net at Gloucester, New Jersey

1881-1882
Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916)
In April 1881, Eakins made the first of several visits to Gloucester, New Jersey, across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, to photograph shad fishermen. His principal motive was to make studies for paintings, but he considered several images pleasing enough to print as gifts for family and friends.
