Although tigers do not live in Japan, it seems that the people of the Edo period had occasion to see the animals, perhaps in side shows that came from China. In China, Korea, and Japan the tiger is considered the most powerful animal in repelling evil, being the symbol of fierceness and strength. The tiger is also one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac.
