After leaving the army, he represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress and the U. S. Congress. Peale created this depiction of Lambert, and that of his sister Martha, in a manner ambitiously stylish. The two siblings are placed in different settings, but are paired by the soft blues in their clothing and the use of graceful, serpentine lines.
