Lambert was John Cadwalader's brother and business partner and, like him, participated in the Revolutionary War. After leaving the army, he represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress and the U. S. Congress. Peale created this depiction of Lambert, and that of his sister Martha, in a manner ambitiously stylish. The two siblings are placed in different settings, but are paired by the soft blues in their clothing and the use of graceful, serpentine lines.
