Thomas Gross was a freed African American cabinetmaker who operated a shop in the Germantown area of Philadelphia, where he designed and made monumental case pieces such as this chest-on-chest. He also maintained a thriving business as an undertaker, a profession many cabinetmakers practiced on the side.
