This halberd was made for an officer of the Styrian infantry troops. The duchy of Styria in Austria was one of the Hapsburg’s hereditary lands. Because of its proximity to Hungary it was one of the first lines of defense of the Hapsburg territories against the Ottoman Turks, who controlled much of Hungary from the early sixteenth century until the late seventeenth century
