LabelThe central motif, a crowned heart with seven emanating branches, was German in origin, and especially popular with Mennonites such as Fanny. The letters OEHBDDE signify "O Edel Herz BeDenk Dein End" or "Oh noble heart think on thine end." This memento mori is flanked by other typical Pennsylvania German motifs, including two proud peacocks, stars, deer, and a variety of vase-and-flower motifs. The whole is framed by a two-color ribbon border with rosettes at the corners, a finish favored for both Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania German samplers.Social Tags [?]fanny nissley [x] pennsylvania sampler [x] sampler [x] us-sampler [x] whitman sampler collection [x] [Add Your Own Tags] |
