Provenance

With Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Paris, purchased from the artist; sold to William J. Glachens [Glackens?], 1912 [1]. With M. Knoedler & Co., New York [2]; Maurice Newton, New York, by 1966; gift to PMA, 1966. 1. Preceding information per the Dauberville Bonnard catalogue raisonné (vol. 2, 1968, no. 578, as "La femme en noir") and communication from Guy-Patrice Dauberville, Bernheim-Jeune (letter dated February 28, 2006, in curatorial file). The name "W.-J. Glachens" is probably a mistake for the American artist William J(ames) Glackens (1870-1938). In 1912 Glackens was commissioned by Albert C. Barnes to travel to France to buy Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works (including works by Bonnard) and may have acquired the painting for himself at this time. The name of Félix Fénéon (1861-1944), Paris, is given in the provenance in a letter from Harry A. Brooks of Knoedler's to Evan Turner, dated December 9, 1966, and on the deed of gift from Newton (copies in curatorial file). Fénéon served as Bernheim-Jeune director from 1906 to 1925; however, according to the letter from Guy-Patrice Dauberville cited above he never personally owned this painting. 3. According to the PMA's deed of gift, the painting was received in 1966 from Knoedler & Co., New York, as a gift from Newton (see also the Brooks letter cited above). The reverse of the painting's frame bears an inventory label of the type used by Knoedler.
