As a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Eakins insisted on intensive study of anatomy and oversaw dissections to accompany lectures on artistic anatomy delivered by Dr. W. W. Keen. Because cadavers were perishable, Eakins and his students also made casts of the dissected body parts to be used as reference tools in the classrooms and studios.
